The short answer

How do I compare moving companies near me?

Ask every company to quote the same written estimate: one inventory from a survey, the same access notes at both ends, the estimate type named, and the valuation option priced.

Three quotes built on different inventories describe three different moves. We publish no average moving cost, because volume, distance, access and season move it too far.

Estimates and paperwork

Which moving estimate actually holds?

Federal rules define two estimate types for an interstate move. The word printed on the estimate decides how far the final bill can move.

Non-binding estimate

The mover’s best guess. The final bill follows the actual weight and the services used, so it can rise.

On an interstate move, the most you can be made to pay at delivery is 110 percent of the estimate. The rest is billed later.

Binding estimate

A guaranteed total for the items and services listed on it. Add items or services and the estimate is revised.

A mover may charge to prepare a binding estimate, but not a non-binding one.

Binding not-to-exceed

A binding estimate with a cap. The price can go down if the shipment weighs less, but not up.

Federal rules define only binding and non-binding. Ask which of the two the document is.

Then check the valuation line. Released value pays no more than 60 cents per pound, per article, so a light, costly item is paid by weight. Full value protection makes the mover repair, replace or pay for it. Neither is insurance.

What moves the price

What sets the price of a move?

Eight things. We do not publish an average price. We publish what moves it, so two quotes can describe the same move.

  1. Volume or weightThe base of everything. This is why decluttering before the survey is the highest-return hour in the process.
  2. DistanceStraightforward on interstate moves; on local moves it usually shows up as travel time rather than mileage.
  3. Access at both endsStairs, elevators, long carries and parking. The most common source of charges people did not expect.
  4. Packing servicesFull, partial or none, plus materials. Cartons and paper are a real line item.
  5. Specialty itemsCrating, disassembly, hoisting and anything unusually heavy or fragile.
  6. Date and seasonSummer, month-end and the first of the month cost more. Flexibility is genuine negotiating room.
  7. Valuation choiceFull value protection applies unless you waive it in writing. Released value pays no more than 60 cents per pound, per article.
  8. StorageAny period between move-out and move-in, plus a second handling of everything at both ends of it.

Questions

What people ask before they book

What happens after I submit a moving inquiry?

A person at HyreMover reads it and replies. Company matching is still being built, so this is not an instant dispatch line. Where we can, we tell you about moving companies serving your route. Your details are never sold, and no mover gets them unless you agree.

Is there a charge to use HyreMover?

No. The form is free and does not commit you to a moving company, a date or a valuation option. You decide whether to talk to anyone and whether to book.

How much do movers cost?

No national average is worth acting on, so we do not publish one. Local moves are usually priced by the hour and crew size. Interstate moves are priced by weight and distance. Access at both ends, packing, specialty items, the date and valuation set the rest.

What is the difference between a binding and a non-binding estimate?

A binding estimate guarantees the total for the items and services listed on it. A non-binding estimate is the mover’s best guess, and the bill follows the actual weight. On an interstate move, you cannot be made to pay more than 110 percent of a non-binding estimate at delivery.

What is a binding not-to-exceed estimate?

A binding estimate with a cap: the price can go down if the shipment weighs less, but not up. Federal rules define only binding and non-binding estimates, so not-to-exceed is a commercial product. Its protection is the protection of the binding estimate underneath it.

Are my belongings insured during a move?

No. Movers offer liability options, not insurance. Released value pays no more than 60 cents per pound, per article. Full value protection makes the mover repair, replace or pay for a damaged item, and it applies unless you waive it in writing. Check your homeowners or renters policy too.

How do I check that a moving company is legitimate?

Look up its USDOT number in FMCSA’s SAFER system and confirm the name and address match. Ask whether it is a carrier or a broker. Ask for a survey of your belongings, get the estimate type in writing, and refuse a large cash deposit.

What is the difference between a carrier and a broker?

A carrier owns the trucks and does the move. A broker sells the move and arranges for a carrier to perform it. Both must be registered with FMCSA for interstate work. The company you book may not be the one that arrives, so ask which one you are dealing with.

How long do I have to file a damage claim?

9 months from delivery on an interstate move. The mover then has 30 days to acknowledge the claim and 120 days to pay, decline or make a firm offer. Note damage on the inventory before you sign, and photograph valuable items before loading.

When will my long-distance shipment arrive?

Within a delivery window, called the delivery spread, not on a set day. Loads are often shared with other shipments. Get the window in writing on the bill of lading, and plan the other end around its last day.

Do moving companies near me follow federal rules?

Only on interstate moves. A move inside one state follows your state’s rules. In 2024, 8.9 percent of people moved within their state and 2.1 percent moved to another state (US Census Bureau, ACS). So most moves run under state rules, not federal ones.
