What a move actually costs
We give you no national average. We give you the eight things that set your price, and how to read the estimate in front of you.

The short answer
A move has no honest national price, so we publish no average. Local moves are priced on crew hours plus a travel or truck fee.
Interstate moves are priced on weight and distance under federal rules. Eight factors set your number: volume or weight, distance, access, packing, specialty items, date, valuation and storage. Compare estimates only when they price the same inventory.
Key takeaways
Volume, distance, access, season and the services you buy move the number too far for one national figure.
Local moves are priced on crew hours. Interstate moves are priced on weight and distance.
Three estimates only compare when all three priced the same inventory and the same access.
Non-binding, binding and binding not-to-exceed are three different promises about what you can be charged.
On a weight or volume move, everything that does not go is money not spent.
Is my move priced by the hour or by weight?
It depends on whether the move crosses a state line. Settle that first, because the rest of the estimate reads differently for each.
Local move: crew hours
Priced on a rate that scales with the number of movers, plus a travel or truck fee.
Anything that slows the day costs money, and most of that is decided before the crew arrives. See how local moves are priced.
Interstate move: weight and distance
Priced on what the shipment weighs and how far it goes, under federal regulation. Hours do not matter.
What the shipment weighs is almost everything. See how interstate moves are priced.
The line is the state line, not a mileage threshold. A 300-mile move inside one state is intrastate. A 20-minute move across a metro area that straddles two states is normally interstate, with one narrow exception for moves inside a commercial zone that spans the boundary. Check which yours is.
What sets the price of a move?
Eight factors, roughly in the order they move the number. The first is the one you control most and the one people deal with last.
| Factor | What it does to the price |
|---|---|
| Volume or weight | The base of everything. This is why decluttering before the survey is the highest-return hour in the process. |
| Distance | Straightforward on interstate moves; on local moves it usually shows up as travel time rather than mileage. |
| Access at both ends | Stairs, elevators, long carries and parking. The most common source of charges people did not expect. |
| Packing services | Full, partial or none, plus materials. Cartons and paper are a real line item. |
| Specialty items | Crating, disassembly, hoisting and anything unusually heavy or fragile. |
| Date and season | Summer, month-end and the first of the month cost more. Flexibility is genuine negotiating room. |
| Valuation choice | On an interstate move, full value protection applies unless you waive it in writing for released value. The carrier may charge for full value; released value costs nothing extra but pays far less. |
| Storage | Any period between move-out and move-in, plus a second handling of everything at both ends of it. |
HyreMover publishes no average moving cost. A number that is wrong for your move is worse than none: it becomes the figure you argue with a fair estimate about.

What lines should a moving estimate show?
A moving bill is not one number, and it should not arrive as one. A quote that bundles these lines cannot be compared with anything.
Hours and crew on a local move. Weight and distance on an interstate one.
On a local move. Ask how it is measured and whether it is charged once or at both ends.
Shown apart from packing materials. Two lines, not one.
Itemized, with unused cartons credited or not, stated either way.
The option you selected, named, with its cost shown.
What can be added to a moving bill?
These are the charges people most often did not expect. Each should be a line of its own, agreed before moving day.
At either address, including the one the estimator has not seen.
When the truck cannot park close to the door.
Booking windows and waiting time in apartment buildings.
On interstate moves, a smaller truck where a trailer cannot reach the address.
Priced per item: crating, disassembly, hoisting, and anything unusually heavy or fragile.
The monthly rate, plus handling in and handling out as separate lines.
Which line do most people miss?
The estimate type. Non-binding, binding and binding not-to-exceed are three different promises about what you can be charged, and the word is on the document, not in the conversation.
On a non-binding interstate estimate, the carrier cannot demand more than 110 percent of the estimate before releasing your belongings. The three estimate types, in detail.
What drives the cost of each moving service?
Each service has its own main cost driver. Follow the link for the full breakdown.
Crew hours, and everything that lengthens the day: stairs, carry distance, elevators and unfinished packing.
Shipment weight above all, then distance, access, and whether a shuttle is needed at either end.
Labor and materials. In a house, the kitchen alone is often a third of the packing labor.
The monthly rate, plus two extra handlings that often cost more than the storage itself on a short gap.
Priced per item on weight, route and equipment, with crating quoted separately.
Hourly, with a minimum. Cheaper partly because the transit risk has moved to you.
The invoice is the smaller number. Downtime is the real one.
Route-driven and seasonal, with open and enclosed carriers a long way apart.
How do I compare three moving estimates?
Make the estimates describe the same move first. Then compare them line by line.
Three companies quoting three different volumes cannot be compared, however carefully you read.
At both addresses, including the one they have not seen.
On the document, in writing.
Labor and materials, shown separately.
Shuttle, stairs, long carry, storage handling, disposal and specialty items.
A quote with released value and a quote with full value protection are not the same quote.
On interstate moves. A narrower window is worth money, and should show as such.
Compare each line, not total against total.
How can I estimate my own moving cost?
Use our moving cost calculator on your own figures. It works hourly for a local move and by weight for an interstate one, with access as its own line.
It is free and needs no email. It is not a quote. When you are ready for real estimates, plan your move with us.
What is the best way to cut a moving bill?
Declutter before the survey. On a weight or volume move you pay to transport quantity, so everything that does not go is money not spent.
The saving carries through packing labor, materials, storage and the unpacking at the other end. No negotiation is worth as much.

Primary-source research and fact checking
We are not a moving company and not a broker. We read the federal rule, the FMCSA record or the state regulator’s page ourselves, and publish what it says with the source and the date we read it.
Where a number cannot be traced to a primary source, we publish the shorter page and say what we could not verify.
- 9
- free moving tools that show their working on the page
- 0
- national average moving prices published, because one figure would mislead

How this desk works
- Primary sources only. Interstate rules come from 49 CFR Part 375 and FMCSA. Carrier records come from SAFER and the FMCSA registration system. We do not cite an article that cites a source; we read the source.
- Every figure carries its retrieval date. Rules are amended and registrations lapse. A fact without the date it was read cannot be checked.
- Fact, calculation and analysis are labeled apart. A quote is a quote, a tool’s arithmetic says so, and an interpretation says it is ours.
- Limits come first. If a rule applies only to interstate moves, or a figure is a range rather than a price, that is said before the figure is used.
Authorship on this site is organizational: the analysis belongs to the desk rather than to a named individual, and we do not publish credentials we do not hold. Our editorial policy sets out how we source, date and correct what we publish.
Sources & retrieval dates
We publish no average moving cost: volume, distance, access and season move the number too far for an average to be usable. The sources above are the federal consumer resources for interstate moves. HyreMover is not a moving company and not a broker: it moves, stores and handles nothing.
